Herb Activities and Applications:

*Saw Palmetto Berry (Serenoa serrulata)-Tones and strengthens the male reproductive system and is valuable in all diseases of the reproductive organs. It may be used safely where a boost to the male sex hormones is required, making it a well-known aphrodisiac. It can also be helpful for an enlarged prostate gland, asthma, all kinds of throat troubles, colds, bronchitis, whooping cough, and as a general tonic to regain strength and weight following a debilitating disease. It is especially useful where there is excessive mucous discharge from the sinuses and nose.

*Oat straw (Avena sativa)-Feeds the nervous system especially when under stress, being specific for nervous debility and exhaustion associated with depression. This herb can be useful in skin complaints and nourishing the hair and nails because of its high silica and calcium content. Oat straw has been used successfully for gastroenteritis, dyspepsia, chest problems, normalizing the sexual gland system, and strengthening heart muscles and urinary organs.

*Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus)-The use of this herb dates back approximately 2,000 years. It has been highly regarded as an adaptogen in that it normalizes all body functions. It can inhibit the stress response by reducing the activity of the adrenal cortex in the brain. It has been used to treat such imbalances as AHDH because of its stress fighting and depression relieving abilities. It can be especially useful as an immune stimulant and is useful for preventing infection during times of intense physical activity and prolonged periods of stress. It can help the liver to detoxify such things as chemo-therapeutic agents and products of radiation exposure. Siberian Ginseng has been used by athletes to increase performance, bolster the immune system, reduce fatigue and muscle soreness after workouts, and reduce the effects of stress. It is best taken consistently and continuously for best results.

*Damiana leaf (Turnea diffusa var. aphrodisiaca)--Has an ancient reputation as an aphrodisiac and may be used to strengthen the male sexual factor especially. It is an excellent herb for strengthening the nervous system. It has a definite tonic action on the central nervous and hormonal (endocrine) systems. Because of its anti-depressant qualities, it can be used for anxiety and depression where there is a sexual factor.

*Hibiscus flower (Hibiscus sabdariffa)--Has been used in this blend for its beautiful color and flavor. Hibiscus has been used to ease indigestion and nausea, increase appetite, promote urination, relieve colds and respiratory trouble, and as an aid to circulation. Hibiscus is commonly made as a tea to ease stomach trouble and for its laxative properties. Hibiscus is also a natural source of Vitamin C. It was used by the Chinese to treat dandruff and stimulate hair growth, as well as, for skin irritations. Hibiscus's antibacterial properties have given it the reputation to aid in the treatment of hemorrhoids and wounds.

*Burdock root (Arctium lappa)-Has been used throughout history as an aphrodisiac, hormone balancer, and potent blood cleanser. It is high in nutrients with an abundance of iron so it is of special value to the blood and as a general body builder. It can improve appetite and digestion, increase lymphatic circulation, purify blood toxins, eliminate long-term impurities from the body, stimulate bile secretion, help restore the function of liver and gall bladder, improve skin problems, and stimulate the immune system in a slow, steady, and deep way.

*Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)- Its use dates back to the third century B.C. where it was primarily used for lung and throat problems, coughs, bronchitis, congestion, and as a mild laxative. It is very beneficial in treating adrenal insufficiency or exhaustion and other glandular problems, as well as, stomach and intestinal ulcers. Licorice is an effective expectorant which liquefies and draws mucous out of the body, which makes it especially helpful for all lung problems. Its use as a mild laxative is safe for children and adults. In addition it may relieve abdominal pain and spasms, help to reduce fever, help for stomach and duodenal ulcers, counteract stress, flu, colds, debility, stabilize hypoglycemia, supply energy to the system to aid recovery from illnesses, ease sore throats, coughs, dryness of lungs, and hoarseness.

It makes an excellent gargle for sore throats and helps clear mucous from bronchial passages. It may have a cooling and healing effect on the bowels.

*Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata)-- Is used in this blend as a hypnotic herb to "set the mood." It is calming to the nervous system and can aid in the transition to a restful sleep, which makes it good for insomnia.
