The most traditional way to drink yerba mate is like the Indians did - from a cup (gourd) and straw (bombilla). This method is to be shared and enjoyed with others and becomes a unique ritual.
Genuine mate drinkers say a well "cured" mate contributes to the good taste of the drink. Also by using the gourd and straw it draws out far more of the valuable nutrients which yerba mate has to offer. Other methods do not. You will need to try your own combination of gourds and straws as yerba mate will taste differently in each type. Each person must experiment to find which best suits his taste!
A bit of info on the Tea Straw (Bombilla):
A straw (bombilla) can be made out of metal or cane. It has a fine filter in one end (small holes). This end is inserted into the mate or loose leaf tea. The straw replaces tea bags as a means for keeping fibrous material from being mixed with the ingested liquid. The metal/stainless steel bombillas can be placed in a dishwasher for cleaning. Some straws can be disassembled and cleaned - others cannot. Some of the ones classified as not cleanable can be cleaned by hand washing in soap and hot water. A pin may be used to push into the small holes to clear them from very small leaves which may collect in the holes. There are straight straws and bent straws. Some people prefer the bent or curved ones because the cup doesn't have to be tilted in order to drink from it.
The tea straw is an easy way to drink ANY loose leaf tea. Simply pour hot water over your herbs in your cup and drink through the straw. The end of your straw filters your tea so you drink only the liquid. It negates the need for a tea pot or clumsy tea ball, which often break and do not travel well. The straw lasts a long time if properly cared for.
Please Note: All Gourds come with curing instructions. Please wash your tea straw in warm soapy water before it's first use. All metal straws last longer than the bamboo ones. Bamboo straws need to be thoroughly dried between uses.
